Speech Tournament

Every year in early spring, PVEF hosts a 3rd Grade Speech Tournament. Registrations begin mid-January. The top 30% of participting 3rd graders from each public school in the Camarillo area compete in their chosen category at a city-wide tournament (private schools are also welcome to compete). Students may choose to compete in the following categories:

  • Poetry - the most popular and competitive category, the student can choose to recite an original or published poem of no more than 3 minutes in length.
  • Storytelling - the student memorizes a story (could be a favorite storybook from early childhood!) of no more than 4 minutes in length, and is encouraged to use gestures and different "voices" for an engaging presentation.
  • Expository - students prepare a "how to" or informative speech about a hobby or favorite subject that is no more than 5 minutes in length. This is the only category in which the student can use props or costumes.
  • Dual Speaking - two speakers work together to tell a story or divide up the lines in a favorite poem. No more than 5 minutes maximum.

If your child wishes to compete in the annual PVEF Speech Tournament, please contact your child's teacher or your school's designated speech coach for participation information.
